Kohl's officesaid he underwent hip surgery in early May, from which he"recovered well", but that a second operation, the details ofwhich were not disclosed, then became necessary. Der Spiegelaffirmed it was a bowel operation and that the father ofGermany's reunification is now in "critical" condition. TheBunte magazine also reported that it was an intestineoperation, adding that Kohl has been in a wheelchair for sometime due to a stroke. Reports from Kohl's office, however, werefar less grave, stating that he will go on vacation once hecompletes his rehabilitation from the hip surgery.
