(AGI) Paris, June 16 - French Ecology Minister Segolene Royalhas declared war on Nutella. In an interview on Canal+,President Francois Hollande's former partner urged viewers togive up the extremely popular spread to save the planet fromdeforestation. Ahead of the climate conference in December inParis, Ms Royal said "massive deforestation" was "one of thecauses of global warming", explaining that the palm oilcontained in the product was one of the major drivers ofdeforestation. When the journalist objected that Nutella was"good", the minister agreed, but said that differentingredients should be used. On its website, Ferrero says palmoil is used because it gives a creamy consistency to theproduct, avoiding recourse to the hydrogenation process, whichwould create dangerous trans-fatty acids. The company alsostressed that its products were made with palm oil fromRSPO-certified (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil)plantations. The French Senate previously took aim at Nutellain 2012, when it tried to increase the tax on palm oil by 300percent. The "Nutella Amendment" failed to be voted through.(AGI). .
