(AGI) Paris, July 1 - France's former President Nicolas Sarkozyhas been detained for questioning over alleged influencepeddling, according to a legal source of the news agency AFP.Mr Sarkozy has been the focus of a judicial inquiry intowiretapping and the violation of investigative secrecy sinceFeb. 26. He arrived on Tuesday morning at the central office ofthe tax police in Nanterre, near Paris, for questioning. Thedecision to detain him is an unprecedented step against aformer president. Investigators can hold Sarkozy for 24 hours,with the option of a one-day extention. Judicial police arelooking into whether the former head of state and his entouragecreated a network of informants to keep them updated about theprogress of judicial proceedings that threatened Sarkozy whenwhen he was head of state between 2007 and 2012. Mr Sarkozywent for questioning voluntarily, arriving just after 8 a.m.local time. Magistrates arrested his lawyer, Thierry Herzog, onTuesday.
