Four Iraqi youths join Giffoni Experience jury

(AGI) Baghdad, June 3 - This year's jury at the GiffoniExperience film festival for young adults will include fourIraqi youths from the Nineveh Plains. Italy's Ambassador inIraq, Massimo Marotti, proposed their participation in thefestival, from July 17 to 26 in Giffoni Valle Piana in Salernoprovince, to give them the "opportunity to experience 10 daysin Italy with peers from other countries in the special role ofmembers of the jury and in the special atmosphere Giffoni hasduring the Festival". Claudio Gubitosi, director of GiffoniExperience, gladly accepted the proposal which was announced atthe Italian Embassy in Iraq on June 2, during celebrations forItaly's Republic Day. Last year the youths, aged between 12 and14, were forced to flee their homes with their families innorthern Iraq following attacks by Islamic State militants.They now live in the monastery of Saint Elijah, in the dioceseof Mosul, in the Christian district of Erbil, with thousands ofpeople from Mosul and the Nineveh Plains. A press release said:"To experience the world through the eyes of others is what thefestival offers the participants, and our young Iraqi friendswill live and share this experience with other youngstersthanks to the generosity of two Italian companies, Prato'sSirio Sistemi Elettronici and Pavia' Valvitalia, whichsupported the initiative promoted by Ambassador Marotti." Theambassador met the youngsters' families in Erbil on May 24, inthe presence of the parish priest, Father Douglas al Bazi. Thefamilies gave their consent to the idea and the youths willtravel to Italy with one of their teachers. (AGI). .
