(AGI) New York, Oct 6 - John Ashe, the former UN GeneralAssembly President, was arrested by American authorities at theend of an investigation on kickbacks paid to UN officials tosupport real-estate development projects in Macao (China).Ashe, who was the General Assembly president from September2013 to September 2014, was arrested in his New York State homeon charges of having received more than 1.3 million dollars,roughly 500,000 dollars in bribery money from a contractor whowanted be be adjudicated a contract to build a UN conferencecentre, and about 800,000 dollars from Chinese entrepreneurs inexchange for supporting their interests at the United Nationsand in the state of Antigua and Barbuda, his native country.The corruption investigation involved another five people,including a Dominican diplomat, Francis Lorenzo, the DeputyPermanent Representative to the UN; and Chinese real-estatetycoon Ng Lap Seng, who was arrested in New York on charges ofhaving illegally introduced 4.5 million dollars into the UnitedStates.
