(AGI/AFP) - Hong Kong, Dec 1 - At least 40 demonstrators werearrested and 37 injured, including 11 police, overnight onSunday in Hong Kong. The police used pepper spray and batons onstudents protesting against Chinese interference in the formerBritish colony which since 1997 has been a Special AutonomousRegion of China. The protesters were trying to enter thegovernment building. The demonstrations are weaker than in thesummer, but Governor C Y Leung said the authorities wererunning out of patience and the police were ready to takefurther action. He called the protests "vain" but oppositionleaders claimed victory after the authorities were forced toclose their offices on Monday morning and parliament had tocease work. The protests centre on the governor's election in2017, which on Aug. 31 Beijing decided would take place from alist of selected candidates. The leader of the protests, JoshuaWong, who was arrested last week during clashes with thepolice, announced that he has begun a hunger strike with twostudent leaders. (AGI) . .
