(AGI) Maiduguri (Nigeria), March 19 - Boko Haram hasperpetrated atrocious massacres in Bama, the second-largestcity in the Nigerian state of Borno, throughout its period ofcontrol since September 2014. Horrific tales have begun toemerge following the city's liberation by Nigerian troops.Survivors described the brutal manner in which the extremistgroup applied their version of Islamic law, telling of corpsespiled into wells and mutilated bodies found on the bridge, inwhat was likely a last-ditch attempt by hostages to flee thetown. The Nigerian army is still combing Bama and gatheringinformation from its citizens. Dozens of women that had beenforced to marry Boko Haram militants were killed by their'husbands' before a battle, witnesses said. One witness, a39-year-old mother of three, Sharifatu Bakura, was spared fromsuch a marriage because she was visibly pregnant, despite herhusband, a combatant, having been killed by the militants fourmonths ago. She affirmed that the Islamist group was aware ofthe imminent military attack and feared that the 'wives' wouldbe given to state troops or other non-believers. The extremiststherefore opted to escape to the nearby town of Gwoza, but notbefore executing their spouses. Meanwhile, just days beforeBama's liberation, the Nigerian city of Gamboru Ngala on theborder with Chad was newly attacked by Boko Haram, which haspresumably regained control over the location since. Twentycivilians were killed in the assault, local sources said: mostof the townspeople fled their homes to seek refuge in thevillage of Kushiri, in Cameroon, thereby allowing the militantsto act undisturbed.. .
