(AGI) Rome, Oct 3 - The Vatican is shocked after MonsignorKrzysztof Charamsa, the assistant secretary of the Vatican'sInternational Theological Commission and an official of theCongregation for the Doctrine of Faith, came out, publiclydeclaring he is gay on Saturday. The Polish-born theologian isnot only homosexual but also has a gay partner. The Vatican'sreaction was irritated and immediate. The spokesman for theHoly See, Father Federico Lombardi announced in a statementthat the Polish priest "will certainly be unable to continue tocarry out his previous work in the Congregation for theDoctrine of the Faith and the Pontifical universities, whilethe other aspects of his situation shall remain the competenceof his diocesan Ordinary," referring to the canonic provisionsthat could be taken against him. Father Lombardi said: "Thedecision to make such a pointed statement on the eve of theopening of the Synod appears very serious and irresponsible, since it aims to subject the Synod assembly to undue mediapressure." In an exclusive interview to the Italian dailyCorriere della sera Monsignor Charamsa said: "Homosexual loveis a familial love, meaning that it needs a family. A lesbianor homosexual couple must be able to tell the Church: 'we loveeach other according to our nature and we offer the good ofthis love to others'." "These are not the current positions ofthe doctrine but they are present in theological research andmy coming out aims at stirring the conscience of this Church ofmine," he said. Criticised by the head of the Vatican's pressoffice precisely for the timing of his coming out, MonsignorCharamsa reacted by standing on the offensive and calling apress conference in Rome, in the presence of his partnerEdward, with whom he exchanged shows of affection whilepresenting a 10-point "Liberation Manifesto against theChurch's institutionalised homophobia". He said: "I want totell my Church that I refuse and denounce the exasperated andoften paranoic homophobia of our circles, as we can no longerhate sexual minorities because, in so doing, we hate Mankind."He added that the Synod due to open of Monday is addressed toall families and is dedicated to the "equality and dignity ofhuman individuals". . .
