(AGI) Washington, Nov 19 - Plans to build Keystone XL, acontroversial oil pipeline from Canada's oil sands to Texas, failed in the U.S. Senate by a single vote. This allowedPresident Barack Obama to avoid the embarrassment of vetoing abill passed by a Senate controlled by his party before the newRepublican majority takes control of both houses of Congress. The measure, already approved by the House of Representativeson Friday, needed 60 votes to go through, but received 59,including 45 Republicans. Democrat Mary Landrieu, who hoped theKeystone vote would help her to win the second round LouisianaSenate seat vote against Bill Cassidy, was sure she couldrecruit 15 Democratic senators ready to turn their backs on thepresident, but there were only 14. However, Republicansupporters of Keystone are not giving up. "We will come backnext year and keep coming back until we get a solution," TexasRepublican Senator John Cornyn told reporters on Tuesday.TransCanada requested authorisation to build Keystone on Sept.19, 2008, as the world financial crisis began and in theaftermath of Hurricane Ike devastating the Gulf of Mexico.Since then, the American energy industry has changeddramatically, with the shale gas revolution opening up a newera of abundance for the U.S.. The U.S. is still an importer, despite the rise in domestic production, importing millionbarrels a day, according to the Energy InformationAdministration. The main supplier is Canada. (AGI) . .
