Telecom Italia Turin research centre celebrates 50th year

(AGI) Turin, Dec 3 - Telecom Italia's centre for research andinnovation celebrated its 50th year on Wednesday. It was set upin Turin in 1964 as CSELT and has now become TILab. Thecelebration in Turin was attended by Mayor Piero Fassino andTelecom Italia's chairman, Giuseppe Recchi. The TILab holdsmore than 3,000 patents, at home and abroad. They weredeveloped after more than 50 collaborations with topuniversities in Italy and the U.S. Among the centre'sachievements are: the first experiments with undergroundfibre-optic communications in the 1970s, which are the basis ofbroadband; the definition of

(AGI) Turin, Dec 3 - Telecom Italia's centre for research andinnovation celebrated its 50th year on Wednesday. It was set upin Turin in 1964 as CSELT and has now become TILab. Thecelebration in Turin was attended by Mayor Piero Fassino andTelecom Italia's chairman, Giuseppe Recchi. The TILab holdsmore than 3,000 patents, at home and abroad. They weredeveloped after more than 50 collaborations with topuniversities in Italy and the U.S. Among the centre'sachievements are: the first experiments with undergroundfibre-optic communications in the 1970s, which are the basis ofbroadband; the definition of audio-video compression standardsfor Mpeg files in the late 1980s, which paved the way for thebirth of CDs and mp3 files. The TILab set several milestones intechnological innovation, such as the first digital videocommunications in the 1980s, which were the basis forvideoconferences. In 1999 the TILab made the first globalvideocall on a 3G network. Its experiments on mobile networkshelped the development of 4G and 4G plus, which made TelecomItalia the foremost telecommunications company in Europe andfifth in the world for the number of patents in the mobilephone sector. "These have been 50 years of great innovationsand historical changes," said Mr Recchi. "Our labs paved theway for some of the technologies and services that have changedour way of life. We took part in the modernisation of Italy andwe are at the heart of the modern era's most importanttechnological evolutionary process: digital transformation." Hesaid Telecom Italia has invested a billion euros in researchand development over three years, and three billion euros ayear to develop and maintain Italy's network. (AGI) . .
