(AGI) Washington, Nov 24 - The resignation of U.S. DefenseSecretary Chuck Hagel has been accepted by President BarackObama, the Pentagon has confirmed. He will stay at the Pentagonuntil his successor is sworn in after the Senate ratifies acandidacy. The president, reported the New York Times, asked MrHagel, 68, to tender his resignation on Friday afterdisagreements with the White House National Security staff.President Obama was said to have decided that Mr Hagel couldnot tackle the threat posed by jihadists of the Islamic State(ISIS). Mr Hagel has not been dismissed, but agreed with thepresident that the Pentagon needed a change of leadership, saidadministration sources. The New York Times said Mr Hagel isbeing used as a scapegoat for the crises that have besieged thepresident, from the administration's slow response to the Ebolaepidemic to the threat posed by ISIS. President Obama is due toannounce the resignation in the White House's Rose Garden onMonday. (AGI) . .
