Pope Francis apologises for Vatican scandals

di lettura
(AGI) Vatican City, Oct. 14 - Pope Francis on Wednesday askedforgiveness for scandals that have taken place in the Churchand in the Vatican. "The Angels of children reflects the gazeof God, and God never loses sight of children. Woe to those whobetray their trust, woe!". The central theme of Pope Francis'address pertained to "promises we make to children, namely:those promises which affect children's expectations about life, their faith in human beings". The Pontiff opened the GeneralAudience at St. Peter's Square by saying: "Today, before Ibegin the Catechism, in the name of the Church, I ask you forforgiveness for the scandals that have occurred recently eitherin Rome or in the Vatican." Although not specifying whichscandals he referred to, it is likely that he meant theannouncement earlier this month from Monsignor KrzysztofCharamsa - a theologian who had worked in the Vatican'sdoctrinal office - that he was a practising homosexual. Theouting led to conflicts in one of the most important Romanparishes, that of St. Teresa of Avila in Corso Italia, headquarters of the General Curia of the Discalced Carmelites. When talking about the Vatican, reference may also have been toformer Archbishop Wesolowski, a nuncio accused of pedophiliaand child pornography. Wesolowski died under mysteriouscircumstances before he could be tried. His death is currentlybeing investigated by clinical pathologists appointed by theVatican Court. In this new "mea culpa", the Pope quoted theGospel that had been read in several languages before hisaddress: "Woe to the world because of scandals. It isinevitable that there will be scandals. But woe to the man whocauses scandals. If your hand or your foot causes you tostumble, cut it off and throw it from you. It is better for youto enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or twofeet and be cast into the eternal fire. See that you despisenot one of these little ones: for I say to you, that theirangels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is inheaven." Commenting on these statements of Jesus, Pope Francisfocused in particular on the "unbearable scandal" of childrenwho are abused, abandoned or not loved, which is "much moreserious because they do not have the means of interpreting it."(AGI). .
