(AGI) Seoul, Mar 2 - North Korea launched two long-rangemissiles on Monday evening that landed in the sea, in defiantresponse to annual military exercises by U.S. and South Koreanforces. The North then threatened "merciless bombardment" ofthe two countries. "The situation on the Korean peninsulais again inching close to the brink of a war," said officialnews agency KCNA quoting an army spokesman, who added with theusual threatening rhetoric: "The only means to cope with theaggression and war by the U.S. imperialists and their followersis neither dialogue nor peace. They should be dealt with onlyby merciless strikes." The eight-week U.S.-South Koreanexercise, called Foal Eagle, involves ground, air and navalfield training, with some 200,000 Korean and 3,700 US troops. Unlike Iran the nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang havenever resumed. The North Korean regime has carried out threelow-yield nuclear tests since 2006. North Korea is thought tocurrently have an arsenal of 10 to 16 nuclear warheads, whichcould rise up to 100 by 2020. However, they do not seem to besophisticated enough at the moment to be miniaturised and mounted on the country's long-range missiles. (AGI) . .
