(AGI) Bologna, Feb 27 - Italy has seen a sharp rise inallergies in recent years. About 30 percent of infants andchildren suffer from some form of allergy and according torecent estimates half of all children in Italy will suffer fromallergic rhinitis by 2020. A congress to be held on Saturday inBologna by the Italian Society of Paediatric Allergy andImmunology (SIAIP) will focus on this problem. SIAIPcoordinator Giovanni Cavagni said ahead of the event that"respiratory and food allergies are on the rise. The number ofchildren intolerant to milk, eggs, nuts and other foods hasdoubled. Global warming is increasing the release of allergenicpollens and is extending the allergy season: grasses start tobloom as early as the beginning of March." In Italy, 10 percentof children under the age of 14 suffer from bronchial asthmawhich, in 80 percent of cases, is caused by allergies. Another18-20 percent have allergic rhinitis, while 10 percent may haveatopic dermatitis. (AGI) . .
