Kormakur's 'Everest' to open Venice Film Festival

(AGI) Venice, July 8 - "Everest", the Universal Pictures filmdirected by Baltasar Kormakur, has been selected to open the72nd Venice International Film Festival to take place on Sept.2-12. The Festival director is Alberto Barbera, within theVenice Biennale chaired by Paolo Baratta. The world premiere of"Everest" is set for Sept. 2 in the Sala Grande of the Palazzodel Cinema on the Venice Lido - not as part of the competition.The film is inspired by attempts to reach the highest mountainpeak in the world, and tells the story of two expedition teamswho experience a violent snowstorm. The climbers' courage istested when they face powerful forces of nature which turntheir obsession into a struggle for survival. 'Everest' is aWorking Title Films production and features Jason Clarke, JoshBrolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, SamWorthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal.It is produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Baltasar Kormakur,Nicky Kentish Barnes, Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson.Presented by Universal Pictures and Walden Media incollaboration with Cross Creek Pictures, it has been adaptedfor movie screens by William Nicholson ('Gladiator') and Oscarwinner Simon Beaufoy ('Slumdog Millionaire'). The film was shotin Nepal, on the slopes of Everest, in the Italian Alps (ValSenales, Trentino-Alto Adige), in Rome's Cinecitta studios andin the UK's Pinewood Studios. Universal will distribute thefilm across the world. In the U.S. 'Everest' will bedistributed from Sept. 18 on IMAX 3D screens and inpremium-large format 3D, then from Sept. 25 on all screens,including 2D. Italian release has been scheduled for Sept. 24. .
