(AGI) Rho (Milan), June 12 - Every year Italy wastes 1.3billion tons of food, worth a total of 750 million dollars. Inshort, the quantity of wasted food could feed three-quarters ofthe Italian population, reported Luigi Sbarra, the nationalcommissioner of the FAI CISL trade union at the Milan Expo onFriday. He was speaking at a conference on work in the agrofoodsector organised by the trade union at Cascina Triulza. MrSbarra urged to focus on product quality but also on jobcreation in a sector like the agrofood sector in which it isnecessary to capitalise on the positive indicators to maximisethe sector's competitiveness, which is to be achieved "not bydowngrading work but by betting on excellence, typical productsand multifunctionality," he said. The positive figures arethe "2.6 billion euros that the e-commerce turns over everyyear in the agrofood sector", but there are also figures whichcould be improved, like the "60 million euros worth of sales incounterfeit goods." He continued: "Our treasure trove isquality. This is what we must focus on because Italy is a troveof cultures, which are the origin of a multitude of differenttraditions. This heritage is to be upgraded and protectedagainst daily attacks. We need to accelerate and extendprotection to all workers." He also pointed out that "marketsare more and more global while rights are not equally global, leading to manifest tensions between workers, countries andeconomic systems." . .
