(AGI) Turin, Dec 11 - We need to "counter the weakening ofcontacts between the different sections of our two systems",because "one of the main strengths of Europe today is therelationship between Italy and Germany", said the President ofItaly, Giorgio Napolitano, while speaking in Turin during theItalian-German high-level dialogues. "We agree that thepriority is to fight joblessness, especially among youngpeople," said the president. "We must put the people of Europeon guard against the excesses of populism. We owe 70 years ofgrowth to European integration," he continued in defence of theEU. However, many things need to be improved: "There wasinadequacy in handling the implications of the euro. That was aparticular responsibility of Italy and Germany," as countriesthat have contributed a lot to European integration. He added:"They - the populists - have come spreading old and newalarming breeding grounds for tension and conflict and to playits part, Europe must draw on its past." (AGI) . .
