Increase cruise access to Venice, says company spokesman

(AGI) Brussels, Nov 27 - It is bad for cruise lines and forVenice to restrict access for large vessels, said RobertAshdown, secretary general of Cruise Lines InternationalAssociation. "Restricting access to the Laguna to vessels under96,000 gross tons is a bad thing for companies and the portitself. We are asking the government for an alternative routefor ships, so we can continue to bring our guests to afantastic city in a safe and sustainable way," he said in aninterview with The MediTelegraph. "This decision is asignificant financial burden to us, because to limit the sizeof vessels bound for Venice reduces the economic return offeredby the sector. We understand the concerns of some of the peopleof Venice, to who we feel an affinity. But right now we need analternative to the traditional routes. We need them, but sodoes Venice," he said.
