(AGI) Rome, June 17 - As Hungary plans to put up a 4-metrebarrier along its 175-kilometre border with Serbia to halt theinflux of illegal immigrants, Pope Francis has made a strongappeal: "I invite you all to pray and seek pardon for thepeople and institutions that are pushing back our brothers,"said the Pontiff, emphasising that the U.N. celebrates WorldRefugee Day on Saturday. The Hungarian Foreign Minister, PeterSzijjarto, explained Budapest's decision to raise a 'wall' onthe Serbian border, saying "as Europe debates the issue,Hungary cannot wait." The government of France announced anambitious plan to create 10,500 beds to welcome asylum seekersand refugees. French Foreign Minister Bernard Cazeneuvesupports a more streamlined procedure for asylum seekers, buthas reiterated that there is a need to take a strong lineagainst clandestine migration, which demands a more 'effective'policy. Actually, in Ventimiglia the attitude of Frenchauthorities has not changed. For five days, a group of migrantshas been sitting on the Balzi Rossi reefs, a few metres fromthe border, waiting for clearance to cross the French Alps. RedCross volunteers have distributed water, food and warm drinks, supported by generous citizens bringing bed covers, umbrellasand clothing. There is concern that the approach of Ramadan, imposing on Muslims a month of dawn-to-dusk fasting, coulddamage the migrants' health. Volunteers report that abouttwenty have asked for medical checkups for suspected scabies, and the Red Cross says they must be carefully screened. Thesituation in the border city, where 200 refugees from the Hornof Africa are waiting, is under control. Meanwhile in Italy, governor Luca Zaia says that the Veneto region cannot take inone more migrant. "As in other regions, we will have to set uptent camps, but it is not civilised to host men, women andchildren in tents." Matteo Salvini reacted to Pope Francis'remarks, asking "How many migrants have found refuge in theVatican? [...]Of course, the true refugees have the right to bewelcomed, but they make up about a quarter of all those comingin." . .
