(AGI) Brussels, Dec 4 - The European Union on Thursday agreed acompromise on growing genetically modified (GM) crops thatgives nations the option to ban them, even if EU authoritieshave approved them for cultivation. Italian EnvironmentMinister and holder of the rotating presidency of the EUEnvironment Council, Gian Luca Galletti, posted in a tweetafter a meeting in Brussels that ended early in the afternoon:"An agreement in principle has been reached in Brussels byCouncil, Commission and Parliament. A final decision that givesnations the freedom to choose is close." The finalisation ofthe agreement is now up to the EU Council, which will discussthe measure at a meeting of ambassadors on Dec 10, and theEuropean Parliament, which will put the matter to the vote inJanuary. Greenpeace commented in a statement that the deal doesnot give governments a legally solid right. "It ties theirhands by not allowing to use evidence of environmental harm toban GM cultivation. This leaves those countries that want tosay 'no' to GM crops exposed to legal attacks by the biotechindustry." (AGI) . .
