Eni hosts Nigeria farming project event at Expo

(AGI) Rome, Oct 12 - The spotlight was being turned on Nigeriaat Milan Expo 2015. Italian oil and gas giant Eni, OfficialPartner for Sustainability Initiatives in African Countries atMilan Expo 2015, is integrating sustainability with operationaland economic-financial aims in the country. The event,organised by Eni at Milan Expo 2015 Casa Corriere, on MondayOct. 12, starts from NAOC/Green River Project Farmers Day tocollect information from communities proud of their farming andconfident about development in their area. The Green RiverProject (GRP) began in 1987 and aims to support agriculturaldevelopment in the four states in which Eni's Nigeriansubsidiary, the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), operates:Imo, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa. More than 35,000 farmers havetaken part and the project which now involves more than 120communities, and has had a direct or indirect impact on morethan 500,000 people. This Corporate Social Responsibilityproject is helping the economic diversification of the country,especially the Niger Delta. The new Nigeria can be seen frominterviews with leading members of the Green River Project withwhom Eni has for decades successfully worked with local peopleto support agricultural development in the Niger Delta. Theexperiences of farmers, small businessmen, women who have hadaccess to microcredit, students, and representatives of theinstitutions and communities are to be given. The discussionwill be moderated by Michele Farina, a journalist on Corrieredella Sera, and Senator Alfredo Mantica and Lapo Pistelli,Eni's SVP Stakeholder Relations for Business DevelopmentSupport. Symbolically the experiences represent the whole worldof the Green River Project, voices and faces of those who arepart of the project and are committed to contributing to theimprovement of agriculture in the Niger Delta and reducingpoverty. The meeting includes the screening of a documentary onthe 19th NAOC/GRP Farmers' Day 2015, which was dedicated toagricultural producers associated with the Eni project inNigeria, on Oct. 10 in Rivers State. Nigeria's PresidentMuhammadu Buhari said the special edition of the Farmers' Day,twinned with the Expo event is a significant moment for theNigerian farming world and for its community. Eni'ssustainability activities, including the Green River Project,take place in the context of the country's development plans,with particular focus on social activities and on theimprovement of the conditions of local people. The company'sapproach to host countries can be seen by its use of the dualflag image: Eni's six-legged dog plus the local flag. The twoflags fly together not only over plants and oil and gas fields,but also in villages and cities where development projects areunderway. (AGI). .
