(AGI) Rome, June 5 - It will take five years and 20 millioneuros to restore the Colosseum arena, rebuilding the flooring, said Minister of Culture and Tourism Dario Franceschini, andSpecial Superintendent for the Colosseum Francesco Prosperetti."I hope to announce the contract-competition for this projectduring 2016," said Mr Prosperetti, explaining that the 20million needed for the entire operation would be divided asfollows: 16 million from national funds "parallel to thestructural funds" and 4 million from the amount made availableby Diego Della Valle for the restoration of the monument, inparticular the strengthening of the hypogeums. "The Colosseumin its grandeur is the symbol not only of Rome but also ofItaly. So this requires an extra effort to make it moreunderstandable and usable," said Minister Franceschini. TheColosseum's beast lift is also back after centuries. Rebuiltduring the making of a documentary by director Gary Glassman,it was inaugurated on Friday afternoon by MinisterFranceschini, Francesco Prosperetti, and the director of themonument Rossella Rea. "I am very happy to see this day...Thisextraordinary work was made possible by the intervention of aprivate individual and in future we will increasingly integratepublic and private operations because we have decades torecover in this area," said Minister Franceschini. The hoist, which weighs 3,300 kilos, of which the cage accounts for 500,is 7.90 metres high, 4.80 metres long and 1.74 metres wide. Thecage is 1 metre high and measures 1.80 metres by 1.40 metres. It was built in 2013 for the documentary "Colosseum - Romandeath trap" and entirely funded by director Gary Glassman. Themanagement asked the director to make the stage device faithfulto the original and to leave it in place after the making ofthe film. It is a copy of one of the 28 lifts in use byDomitian and Macrinus (late first century AD - early thirdcentury AD). Invisible to spectators, these lifts suddenlythrew the beasts into the arena for the hunting shows or tocarry out death sentences.. .
