(AGI) Turin, Dec 12 - A four-year-old boy has been given anartificial blood vessel in a hospital in Turin, the first suchtreatment in Italy. He was born with a severe kidney problemand large catheters used for dialysis gradually causedobstructions in the vessels leading to the heart. His conditiongot worse and on Thursday an operation was carried out by thehead of paediatric cardiology at the Regina Margherita Hospitalin Turin, Gabriella Agnoletti. An artificial blood vessel wasformed with the help of collateral vessels and stents, meshtubes normally inserted into a natural passage in the body toprevent or counteract localised constrictions. The new path tothe heart was then put in place by a team led by Dr. CarloPace. The operation was a success and the boy is recovering inhospital. . .
