(AGI) Beirut, June 30 - Lebanon has launched the Dewetraplatform, used by Italian civil protection teams to forecast,prevent and monitor the risk of fires and hydrogeologicalincidents. This was announced during the opening of theNational Lebanese Operation Room for monitoring and mitigatingnatural and man-induced disasters. The 'Sustainable NaturalResource Management Platform and Early Warning System' (SuNaR)was developed by Fondazione Cima from Savona, Italy, incooperation with the Lebanese national research council (CNRS).The original system, which aimed at assessing the dynamic riskof forest fires, has been upgraded through the integration ofupdated data on the status of vegetation plus satelliteinformation. Moreover, the Dewetra platform benefits from pilotlinks to the flood alert system in three river basins. Thecooperation between Cima and CNRS lies within the framework ofthe Capwater project, aimed at sustainable water resourcesmanagement, and funded by the World Bank with GlobalEnvironment Facility (GEF) grants.. .
