'Italy under pressure', says EU immigration commissioner

(AGI) Brussels, April 14 - Italy is under pressure due to therise in immigration flows from North Africa, said EUCommissioner for Immigration, Home Affairs and Citizenship,Dimitris Avramopoulos on the sidelines of a hearing before theEuropean Parliament. "We must support and help it", he said. The new emergency created by the latest influx of immigrantsacross the Strait of Sicily requires immediate action byEurope, Mr Avramopoulos said while announcing a trip to Sicilynext week "to meet Interior Minister Angelino Alfano and visitthe reception centres for immigrants", he said at the end ofthe hearing.

"States have already received European fundsto tackle the emergency and we're ready to allocate more, butthis is not so much the issue, as much as developing along-term strategy", the Commissioner told European reporters.The European Commission, he recalled, is working on an agendalaying the grounds for the EU's new immigration policy, whichwill be presented at the end of May. "Up to now the approachhas been fragmented; now we want it to be shared and complete",Mr Avramopoulos said. (AGI) . .
