At least 5 injured in Istanbul metro blast, says mayor

(AGI) Istanbul, Dec 1 - A bomb exploded in an underpass ofIstanbul's Bayrampasa metro station. "It was caused by a bombwhich injured five people," the mayor of the Bayrampasa AtillaAydiner district of Istanbul told the Haber TV network. Theexplosion was provoked by a pipe bomb, a hand-crafted deviceconsisting of a pipe stuffed with explosives. A pipe bomb wasalso reported by the Dogan news agency, which quoted securityforces. The prefect of Istanbul, Vasif Sahin, was more cautiousin reporting the incident and said that the cause of theexplosion was not known and only one person had been slightlyinjured. Turkish authorities have not yet released a statementon the official causes of the explosion. The site of the blastwas immediately reached by ambulances, the fire department andthe police, who cordoned off the area. Several metro lines havebeen suspended and passengers have been evacuated out of someof the coaches because of the glass from the windows that brokein the blast. . .
