(AGI) Rome, Nov 27 - Only half of HIV patients are reaping thebenefits of antiretroviral drugs even though theireffectiveness is now 90 percent. There are about 40 millionpeople in the world affected by HIV, 15 million have access toantiretroviral drugs, but only 25 percent benefit. In Italy andother western countries the figure rises to 50 percent. Theremaining 50 percent do not know they have contracted HIV,don't go to health centre appointments or are lost somewherealong the way. To address the problem the Spallanzani Institutehas launched a project to bring together 10 HIV specialistcentres in Italy, and associations working to combat AIDS andsupport people with HIV. Institute scientific director GiuseppeIppolito said: "The Spallanzani Institute is involved in threeimportant European projects: one to retain HIV patients duringtreatment, one to prevent HIV in vulnerable people, and one toimprove the quality of HIV prevention. In Italy we have justlaunched a project to carry out a systematic analysis of thework carried out by associations in order to encourage HIVpatients to continue their treatment, so that we cansystematically and uniformly provide the best means for peopleto do so." Associations provide self-help groups, supportgroups, counselling, information leaflets, chat rooms andonline forums and welcome centres for HIV/AIDS patients fromoverseas or marginalised backgrounds. All these tools are vitalto help hospitals carry out their work. The project aims tocreate a network of resources to better assess, implement andharmonize them. It also tries to identify areas for developmentin programming, strategies and actions to optimise in-careretention by analysis of current needs. (AGI). .
