(AGI) Taranto, Nov 27 - Safety and staff training are majorissues being addressed by Italian oil and gas company Eni. Itsaid investments of 1.3 billion euros were spent onoccupational safety and environmental protection last year.Injuries were 0.25 for every million hours worked. In 2014,1.125 million hours were spent on training staff and safety.Eni presented a report on its activities and announced anenhanced training programme at a meeting on Thursday at Tarantouniversity organised by Confindustria. Eni owns a refinery inTaranto, southern Italy, and the meeting focused on anoccupational safety code drafted by Ernesto Irace of Tonucci &Partners. Giuseppe Ricci, executive vice president of Health,Environment & Quality, said: "Much has been done from the pointof view of plants and facilities as the injury rate proves.Getting 0.25 every million hours in the first nine months of2015, means one occupational injury every four million hoursworked. These data are quite advanced. Today, however, we havean equally important commitment, namely enhancing the cultureof safety so that it may become everyone's heritage. We wish toannounce it to our managers, but above all to our workers andcontractors. Eni is now planning a major event which is roadshows on safety. Our CEO took part in five of these, because wewish to disseminate this message as much as possible, to provethat the executives are also concerned about this issue, Havingprinted in one book all the rules on occupational safety, andhaving a code, means following this right path, thus providinga benchmark for all our workers." Domenico Noviello, executivevice president of Eni's associative bodies, said: "Eni as agroup does not stop at what laws on safety and environmentestablish. We try and seek solutions to improve oureffectiveness and applicability. In fact, whoever works in oilfields, has the utmost concern for safety for the entire groupand for those who work for it. This is the path we arefollowing, and at events such as the one held in Taranto, whereEni is present, they take on a meaning which conveys to all theenterprises attending the sense of our experience." LucaAmoruso, director of Eni's refinery in Taranto, said:"Taranto's specificity has always called our attention to theissues of safety and environment. In November 2013, we signed aMOU with some ministers, in the prefect's office, whichdemanded a great amount of work, but now we are reapingresults. Taranto's refinery has reported zero injuries in thepast five years. Companies have had no injuries in the past 18months and we would like to close 2015 with no injuries acrossthe entire system."
