Though Europe is "wounded", he said, itmust remain united and not forget its role in internationalpolitics nor its recovery from the economic crisis. EuropeanCommission President Jean-Claude Juncker praised Mattarella'sspeech, delivered on a day in which isolationism appeared togain another foothold among a number of member states, with theleader of France's right-wing Front National, Marine Le Pen,also speaking in Strasbourg. "In Paris," Mattarella said beforeremembering the sacrifice by the young Italian Valeria Solesin,"they attacked our everyday lives, our concept of togetherness, our habits; the way of being, thinking, and living that ischaracteristic and belongs to the Union's citizens." Wednesdayalso marked the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second WorldWar. During the conflict, Mattarella noted, "democracies, starting with the United Kingdom, did not think of their ownsalvation alone, but, on the contrary, they were able to elicitthe greatest international movement of consciences." . .
