(AGI) Rome, Nov 25 - Italy and France ratified an agreement onWednesday to fund the Turin-Lyon stretch of the ConnectingEurope Facility (CEF). During a press conference,Infrastructure and Transport Minister Graziano Delrio confirmedthat European funding for the Turin-Lyon corridor and theBrennero tunnel (worth 1.8 billion Euro) had been accepted. Themeeting with journalists following a summit attended by theScandinavia-Mediterranean Corridor coordinator, Pat Cox, andthe Mediterranean Corridor coordinator Yan Brink Horst. Duringthe meeting, the state of advancement of these two EuropeanCorridors was discussed. Delrio emphasized during his pressconference that "railway networks are of strategic importancefor the country, for quality of life and transport safety". TheItalian government, he added, is working extremely hard both onthe Brennero Corridor and the Mediterranean Corridor. Allcountries involved have a good relationship, and substantialfunding is in place. The first tranche of funding for theConnecting Europe Facility is for approximately 250 projects,including the Brennero tunnel (receiving the biggest funding).The Italian government, Delrio stated, has achieved "a greatfinancial investment for the Rhine-Alps Corridor, currently notrepresented on the Genova-Rotterdam stretch, which is decisivein improving the transport of goods and developing port reformand logistics to their full potential, allowing our ports to bestronger and more competitive. These are not matters which aremuch-discussed in Italy," he added, "but strengthening our railnetwork is important both strategically and as a tool topromote the exchange of culture, tolerance and humandevelopment". Brink Horst pointed out that, "while Europe talksof re-establishing borders, we are forging ahead with theBrennero and Transalpine corridors, and hope to see theconnections that the European Union is supporting completed by2020".. .
