(AGI) Rome, Nov 24 - Thirty-thousand foreign fighters from 100different countries have gone to fight in Syria and Iraq,according to the "Global Terrorism Index Report 2015". Thereport was carried out by the Institute for Economics andPeace" and presented at the conference "After Paris: terrorism,a growing threat" promoted by ISPI, the Italian Institute forInternational Political Studies. Most foreign fighters comefrom the Middle East and North Africa, but a growing proportionare from Europe (in order, from Russia, France, Germany,Britain, Belgium, Bosnia, Sweden, Netherlands, Austria,Denmark, Kosovo, Norway, Spain and Italy), the United States,Canada and Australia. According to the report, globalterrorism is continuing to increase: 88 percent of attacks hitcountries involved in violent conflict, mostly domestic, whilethe number of fatalities grew by 80 percent in just one year,from 18,111 in 2013 to 32,685 last year. This is the highestlevel ever recorded, although nearly eight out of 10 victims,or 78 percent, were from just five countries: Iraq, Nigeria,Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria. The number of countriestargeted by attacks is also on the rise, from 88 in 2013 to 93in 2014. The figure has been rising since 2011. In Westerncountries, 70 percent of the fatalities were at the hands of"lone wolves": individuals or groups of individuals, explainthe authors of the study, who take action, without the materialsupport of the ideological or political organisation to whichthey claim allegiance.
