(AGI) Hanoi, Nov 23 - Hanoi's Casa Italia staged Vietnam'sfirst fashion show with disabled models on UN InternationalDisability Day. The event, which featured around 30 differentlyabled models from all over the country, was organised tohighlight the issue of disability in Vietnam by raising publicawareness a year after Hanoi's ratification of the UNconvention on disabilities. The aim was to focus publicattention on the three principles of equality, inclusivenessand recognition of the social contribution of people withdisabilities. Vietnam is updating its laws by incorporating theUN convention, starting with the acceptance of diversity. Manyof the models on the catwalk are integrated into Vietnamesesociety, but much remains to be done, especially in ruralareas. The fashion show, which was set up by "The Will to Live"disability organisation, was organised by the Italian Embassyin Hanoi, the UN office in Vietnam and the designers of BiancoLevrin, Chula and Ideas. Pratibha Mehta, UN coordinator inVietnam, said: "This type of event is extremely useful inhelping to combat prejudice and change attitudes towardsdisability." Cecilia Piccioni, Italian Ambassador in Hanoi,said: "Casa Italia is happy to host this fashion show in anattempt to join other governments and organisations in raisingpublic awareness on human rights and equality."
