1, 500 youngsters to run in Vivicitta marathon in Lebanon

(AGI) Rome, Nov 28 - The Vivicitta marathon is being held inLebanon again this weekend, bringing a message of peace anddialogue between different cultures and different faiths. OnSunday, around 1,500 children will take part in the marathon inTiro, which is being organised by the Italian Union for Sportfor All (UISP), the United Nations Relief and Works Agency forPalestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and the ItalianEmbassy in Beirut. Lebanese and Palestinian youngsters from theborder refugee camps and Syrians from refugee camps and schoolsin Tiro will be taking part. One, two and three-kilometremarathons are being run along the coast road, near the historiccentre of the town. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon(UNIFIL), currently under Italian command and numbering around1,000 soldiers, will be deployed to help on the day. The firstedition of Vivicitta in Lebanon was held in Beirut in 2007, andwas open to all the local population. National UISP PresidentVincenzo Manco said that after that the focus was on peoplefrom refugee camps, given their greater awareness ofhumanitarian problems. As of 2012, Lebanese children were alsoinvited to take part, and the following year they were joinedby Syrian refugee children. This ensured that the marathon tookon a holiday atmosphere, involving children of variousethnicities and religions. . .
