WORKING LUNCH IN ANKARA ON TURKEY'S EU MEMBERSHIP

The lunch was an occasion forthose present to articulate serious ideas about the state ofrelations between the European Union and Turkey and ways inwhich the membership process can be re-launched. In particular,Bozkir illustrated Turkey's new strategy for the EU that givesfresh vigor to relations with Brussels through political andeconomic reforms and a communications plan to influencenational and international opinion. Bozkir also gave a previewof two documents, which will be published soon to givesubstance to the strategy, entitled "Action Plan for EUaccession" and "EU Communication Strategy." Among other topicscovered were the benefits of the customs union between Turkeyand the EU, as well as the possible implications for Turkey ofcompletion of negotiations for the Transatlantic Trade andInvestment Partnership between the U.S. and the EU. vel.
