(AGI) New Delhi, Dec 8 - Authorities in New Delhi have bannedinternational taxi-booking service Uber after a driverallegedly raped a female passenger. Indian police arrested thesuspect on Sunday, broadcaster NDTV reported. Deputycommissioner of police for North Delhi, Madhur Verma, specifiedthat the driver was held at his home in the Uttar Pradeshdistrict, where his car was found as well. The victim is a26-year-old woman from a New Delhi suburb, who ordered a taxiusing the Uber app on Friday to take her home. The driver, whoappeared in court briefly to be remanded in custody on Monday,was arrested for a sexual assault three years ago. He was hiredby Uber six months ago without an adequate selection procedure,police said. Uber is collaborating with investigations, butlegal steps could be taken against the company for failing tocheck whether the driver had a clean police record, accordingto NDTV. "Every violation by Uber will be evaluated and we willgo for legal recourse," said Verma. Uber described the incidentas horrific. "Our entire team's hearts go out to the victim ofthis horrific crime. We will do everything to help bring thisperpetrator to justice and to support the victim and her familyin her recovery," Uber CEO Travis Kalanick said in a statement,adding that Uber would work with the government to establishclear background checks currently absent in their commercialtransportation licensing programs. . .
