(AGI) Moscow, Oct. 8 - Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievichhas won the Nobel prize for literature. The Swedish Academypraised Alexievich's "polyphonic writings", describing them as"a monument to suffering and courage in our time". "I love theRussian world, but I do not love Stalin and Putin," she said inone of her first public statements. According to the author of"Voices from Chernobyl", "Zinky Boys" and "Second-hand Time",those two leaders represent the past of an oppressive andimperialist Soviet Union. "I also don't like the fact that 84percent of Russians want Ukrainians killed," she said in apress conference at the Pen Club in Minsk, adding that shethinks Putin is creating a "second Afghanistan" in Syria. Theformer investigative journalist was favourite from the start towin the prize. The author of works that are halfdocumentary and half fiction has written books about the mostsensitive issues, like the Chernobyl disaster and the war inAfghanistan (Zinky Boys). Her stories, always based onpatiently gathered testimonies, have been translated intoseveral languages and published worldwide. In 'Enchanted withDeath' and 'Second-hand Time', she draws a ruthless butpassionate picture of life in Russia after the collapse ofcommunism.
