(AGI) Rome, Sept 29 - The first superconducting magnet for theJT-60SA experimental nuclear fusion reactor under constructionin Japan was presented in Genoa on Tuesday by ENEA, the ItalianNational Agency for New Technologies, Energy and SustainableEconomic Development, and ASG Superconductors, asuperconducting magnet manufacturing company. The Tokamak, aplant that will begin the plasma burn-through in 2019,reproduces the same nuclear reaction that occurs in stars. Itis part of the Broader Approach Programme promoted by Europeand Japan to accelerate research on nuclear fusion. The agencysaid that the Euro-Japanese Tokamak ITER being manufactured inCadarache, France, is a fundamental step in one of the world'sbroadest and more complex nuclear fusion programmes. ENEA ispart of the Broader Approach Programme and project leader forresearch on nuclear fusion. The ceremony was attended byENEA Commissioner Federico Testa, the president of ASGSuperconductors Davide Malacalza, the CEO of ASG VincenzoGiori, Walter Tosto, president of Walter Tosto SpA, and 50European and Japanese participants in the TechnicalCoordination Meeting. It was called by ENEA to take stock ofthe progress on the experimental reactor. Mr Testa said: "Thenuclear fusion sector represents a clear example of how thecollaboration between research and industry is a winningsolution, as proven by the billion euros worth of orders won byItalian companies. Within this framework, ENEA is capable ofoffering growth opportunities for small and medium-sizeenterprises wanting to compete on the global market byincreasing the transfer of technological know-how and byproviding training activities in high technology andinnovation." Mr Mascalza said: "To have manufactured thecoils of the JT60SA Tokamak in compliance with the deadlinesand the specifications confirms our leadership position in thesuperconducting magnet sector. Our ever-closer collaborationwith ENEA is extremely important because thanks to ourcompetences, a company legally and industrially headquarteredin Italy like ASG can compete on international markets fororders to supply magnets for industrial applications and forthe med-tech and energy sectors. We are developing whollyItalian innovative technologies like the MgB2 superconductingmagnesium diboride wire that could have important applicationsin energy storage and transportation systems.". .
