(AGI) Rome, Nov. 25 - The Italian doctor who contracted theEbola virus in Sierra Leone is being treated with anexperimental drug at Rome's Spallanzani hospital. The "specificantiviral treatment is a drug which is not registered in Italy.It was authorised in an ordinance by Italian Medicine AgencyAIFA, as requested by the Health Ministry", hospital staffstated during a press conference. The doctor "is in goodoverall condition", although he was "presenting with theshivers and a fever" when he arrived at the hospital, alongwith "a general sense of discomfort and conjunctivalhyperaemia", said Dr. Emanuele Nicastri, an infectious diseasesspecialist. The patient "is not showing signs of dehydration",according to the first medical bulletin disseminated when hewas first admitted. "His liver and spleen are within the normalrange, and there are no worrying sounds coming from his chest.We have started him on a specific antiviral treatment with anexperimental drug". A team of 15 doctors and 15 volunteerworkers from Spallanzani hospital has been tasked with treatingthe Ebola patient. They will be working shifts based on thepatient's condition. As for the experimental drug with whichthe Emergency doctor is being treated, "its name will not bedivulged until we have established the treatment protocol, butit is already being used to treat Ebola in the USA and EU." . .
