(AGI) Rome, Feb 23 - U.S. ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute doesnot see "any danger of ISIS arriving in Europe from Africa",but warned that we should not underestimate "hundreds orthousands of potential foreign fighters with European passportswho could launch attacks after being radicalised in Syria andIraq." Talking about the situation in Libya and jihadistinfiltration, Ambassador Lute said that one of the problems wasthe arms left over from Colonel Gaddafi's regime. He said thatNATO is following the situation "very closely". The ambassadoralso excluded for now any Alliance intervention in Libya andencouraged the diplomatic efforts of UN envoy, Bernardino Leon."There are many options and I don't think that NATO is one ofthe first," he said, during a discussion at the AmericanEmbassy in Rome, stressing that currently "there are no plans"for an Alliance role in Libya. Mr Lute expressed the "fullsupport" of the United States in the negotiations mediated bythe UN. "The F-35 programme is a key element for the Alliance",but "NATO does not issue instructions to member countries", thediplomat added, pointing out that the purchase of the jets is a"sovereign decision" of individual countries, "on which I cannot interfere". . .
