(AGI) Tokyo, March 10 - An exposition of paintings by Italianartist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, better known as Guercino,has opened in Japan. The event is hosted by Tokyo's NationalMuseum of Western Art and will remain open until May 31. Atotal of 44 works by one of the greatest Baroque artists are ondisplay, including large prestigious paintings from thePinacoteca Civica museum in Cento, Galleria Borghese, the FavaCollection and the Sir Denis Mahon Charitable Trust. The museumin Tokyo also owns one of his works: "David with the Head ofGoliath." The inauguration was attended by the Italianambassador in Japan, Domenico Giorgi, and Japan's DeputyMinister of Education, Masaaki Akaike, along with the mayor ofCento, the superintendent for the provinces of Bologna andFerrara and the director of Galleria Borghese. The exhibitionis an example of the close cooperation between Japan and thePinacoteca of Cento, which was seriously damaged in anearthquake in May 2012. At the opening, the Italian ambassadorthanked Japan for its generous contribution to the museum andemphasised the existing close ties between Japan and Italy.
