(AGI) - Istanbul, Oct. 1 - The G20 meeting of energy ministersopened on Thursday in Istanbul. The two-day conference waskicked off by Turkish Energy Minister Ali Riza Alaboyun, whostressed the importance of the issues that will be debated.Turkey hosts the event as the holder of the G20 presidency.Thursday's programme focused on access to energy in Sub-SaharanAfrica, a still unattainable dream for 630 million people,two-thirds of the population south of the desert. Bringingenergy to these people is a challenge, as the Turkish ministersaid in his opening speech. Ankara took on the challenge yearsago, "when development and cooperation programmes withcountries that remain excluded from the dynamics of globaldevelopment were launched." Alaboyun stressed the importance of"involvement and inclusion" and said he hoped the G20 summitwould be an opportunity to make "an important step" indeveloping countries that "as long as they are cut off fromelectricity, any possibility of development is ruled out. " Thefirst day of the conference on access to energy aims to lay thebasis for investments in infrastructure. Another step regardsthe coordination of programmes that are already in place tomake the most of renewable energy sources and research in thisarea. The Turkish minister said the G20 meeting should providean opportunity to boost initiatives in this field. "Workingtogether to define a plan of action can be extremely importantto take steps forward to improve living conditions in theentire area." On Friday, the meeting will be opened by a speechdelivered by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The speech will befollowed by sessions on access to energy, with the definitionand adoption of an action plan that includes investments in thefield, the use of renewable energy sources, a research plan tomaximise energy efficiency and a list of priorities, which willbe the starting point for China's G20 presidency in 2016.Friday's programme will be closed by a statement which willbecome part of the programme of the summit in Antalya on Nov.15 and 16. The Italian delegation is led by Gilberto Dialuce,General Manager for Energy Security and Infrastructure at theMinistry of Economic Development.. .
