Despite months of negotiationsand some progress, positions still seem to be far apart. U.S.Secretary of State John Kerry urged the Islamic Republic to"make all possible efforts" to produce evidence of the peacefulintentions of its nuclear programme. IranianForeign Minister Javad Zarif said an agreement was stillpossible if the West did not make what he called "excessivedemands". However, if an agreement were not reached because theWest refused to be flexible, then "the world will understandthat the Islamic Republic sought a solution, a compromise and aconstructive agreement and that it will not renounce its rightsand the greatness of the nation". An American source said:"There is still a distance to be bridged and we don't know ifwe will be able to do it." The 5+1 group of the United States,China, Russia, United Kingdom, France and Germany, urged Iranto reduce its nuclear programme by setting limits, but Tehraninsists the programme is only for peaceful purposes.
