Exhibition in Cairo pays tribute to Alessandro Monti

(AGI) Cairo, July 2 - The Italian Cultural Institute in Cairohas paid tribute to Alessandro Monti with an exhibition thatretraces the creative life of this Italian designer. Under thetitle "Alessandro Monti. Italian design on Egyptian textiles",the event was organised in collaboration with collector andcurator Francis Amin. Born in Naples in 1925, Monti moved toEgypt with his family at an early age. He first lived in Suezand later in Alexandria, where he died on June 4, 2015. Hiscareer began in 1956 with the application to local fabrics ofItalian designs combined with traditional Islamic and ancientEgyptian themes. His talent was soon recognised by numerousEgyptian textile companies. With his wife Tatiana, he extendedhis creations to all kinds of fashion and styles, producingfabrics to meet the demand of state-run factories. In 1965,Monti met Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who greatlyadmired the work of the Italian master, and helped Monti findmore work with the biggest textile companies. A leading figurein the cultural landscape of Alexandria from 1970 to 2001, hewas president of the Italian Charity Society and from 1977until his death he chaired the Dante Alighieri Institute. Thestory of his life has also been told in a film made by SherifFethy Salem, dedicated to the "Italians of Egypt", and in adocumentary on Rai 2 television.. .
