European Union treaties on display at Foreign Ministry

(AGI) Rome, July 17 - The Foreign Ministry is celebrating thehistory of the European Union, putting on display originaldocuments and treaties that have marked the birth and variousstages of the union up to the present. Cabinets with thedocuments are in the ministry's Sala Mosaici, from the firsttreaty, which in 1957 inaugurated the European Common Market,to Maastricht and Lisbon. A brief ceremony will be held onFriday before the start of the informal meeting of leaders ofthe European Union countries. The originals of the documentsare held by the Foreign Ministry's diplomatic disputes andtreaties judicial services in large combination safes topreserve their integrity. Over the years other European stateshave requested that they be exhibited for special occasions. Inthis instance, the treaties are being exhibited inspecially-built cases with shock-proof glass. The glass usedprevents the documents from being discoloured or damaged bylight and the cases have been placed in such a manner toprevent them from being directly affected by sunlight. (AGI). .
