EU-HORN OF AFRICA MIGRATION CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN ROME

(VELINO) Roma, 27 Nov - The "EU-Horn of Africa migration routeinitiative" (also known as the Khartoum Process), is aninnovative approach to the migration issue organised by Italyas part of its presidency of the EU. It begins with aconference, which takes place on Friday, Nov. 28 in Rome, whichhas been constructed on the fact that the migration problem isbroad and multifaceted and cannot be solved only in terms ofsecurity. It is believed that there is a need for greater andmore effective cooperation with the countries of origin andthose they travel through. The EU has not talked with thecountries from which most migrants come, so Italy has decidedto involve everyone directly. The conference of ministersbrings together all the countries of a region that hasexperienced instability and crisis in recent years. The aim ofthe conference, chaired by Foreign Affairs minister PaoloGentiloni and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano, with DeputyMinister Lapo Pistelli and Undersecretary Domenico Manzione, isto kick off a joint effort to set up practical ways to fighthuman trafficking. It also aims to increase discussion aboutthe problem. The conference will include the 28 EU memberstates plus Libya, Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia,Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya and Tunisia. vel.
