Concert in Estonia celebrates Italy's EU presidency

(AGI) Tallinn, July 7 - The Italian embassy in Tallinncelebrated the beginning of Italy's presidency of the EuropeanUnion with a concert featuring selections from GaetanoDonizetti, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. The music wasperformed by five Italians who were selected thanks tocooperation between the Fondazione Donizetti (DonizettiFoundation) in Bergamo and the Bergamo Musical Festival. Theorchestra, the finest national company, was under the baton ofEstonia's renowned maestros. The concert was attended by seniorEstonian officials, including Prime Minister Taavi Roivas whogave a rousing speech, which began with a phrase in Italian,praising bilateral relations with Italy and its role at thehelm of the European Union. The speaker and deputy speaker ofthe Estonian parliament were also present, as was formerPresident Arnold Ruutel, the ministers of Social Affairs,Agriculture, Justice, Economy and Health as well as a number ofMPs, the mayor of Tallinn, the chief of the Armed ForcesGeneral Staff and representatives of all the various embassies,including business and economic representatives, both Italianand Estonian. During the interval, the Italian ambassadorhosted a reception featuring Italian food and drink, all ofwhich was organised in cooperation with the EU Commission'sdelegation in Tallinn and the European agency that manageslarge-scale IT systems dealing with freedom, security andjustice. The concert was broadcast live by Estonian radio andwas recorded by a TV station that will rebroadcast it in thecoming days.. .
