(AGI) Rho, Sept 18 - A universal charter, drawn up by the WorldAssociation of Agronomists, setting out the ethical principlesfor professional development in full respect of the communitiesof all countries was approved at Expo Milano 2015. Thedocument, setting out the principles of governance, is theassociation's legacy to Expo and the Milan Charter. 'We areconvinced that our professional approach and advanced technicalsolutions elevate our ethical responsibility and ensure that wealways operate in the general interest and with a view tosocial progress,' said President of the World Association ofAgronomists Andrea Sisti. 'This means that there is tremendouspotential for the work of agronomists in the face of21st-century global challenges, which is why we are workingtogether to draw up a food-production and environmentalprotection strategy for the planet as a whole, and forlate-developing areas in particular', he added. Proposalsinclude the rehabilitation of cities and degraded urban areas,genuine investment in conserving the biodiversity of cultivatedagricultural species and making nutritional education amandatory school subject. Ten points in particular wereidentified: the safety and quality of products, sustainability,biodiversity, sustainable soil management, landscapepreservation, social use of genetics and technology,intellectual independence and professional autonomy, ongoingtraining and fostering solidarity among colleagues.
