'Timbuktu' sweeps France's Cesar Awards

(AGI) Paris, Feb 21 - A triumph for 'Timbuktu' at the 40thCesar Awards, the Oscars of French cinema. The film on jihadismwon seven awards, including one for best director forAbderrahmane Sissako, making the Franco-Mauritanian the firstAfrican director to win the award. Another first was forKristen Stewart, who was the first American to win a Cesar asbest supporting actress, alongside Juliette Binoche in "SilsMaria". Timbuktu, applauded but not awarded in Cannes and inthe running for an Oscar for best foreign film which will beawarded on the night between Sunday and Monday, was honoured asbest film, music, editing, sound, cinematography and originalscreenplay. The story about the conquest of the historicAfrican city by cruel Islamic fundamentalists made an impact inParis, as the city was still in shock after the attacks thattook place in early January. During the award ceremony, tributewas paid to the victims of terrorism and to Charlie Hebdo.Pierre Niney won the prize for best actor for his portrayal ofYves Saint-Laurent in the film of Jalil Lespert. Adele Haenelwon best actress for "Les Combattants" of Thomas Cailley.
