In a replyto a query in the parliament that the Taj Mahal was originallya temple, the Indian minister informed that the government hasno evidence to prove it. Six lawyers based in Agra city, hadfiled a petition in a local court last year demanding that theTaj Mahal be handed over to Hindus as it was a temple. The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in17th Century in memory of his wife who was buried at the site.More than 10,000 tourists visit the monument daily. Lawyers hadapproached the court to declare the monument a Hindu temple asthey felt that there was evidence to prove that the monumentwas originally a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.
