(AGI) Rho (Milan), June 4 - The main themes at the WorldEnvironment Day on Friday will be: "Seven Billion Dreams"; "APlanet"; and "Consume in Moderation." The World Environment Dayhas been called by the United Nations in order to promptgovernments, communities and single individuals to improvetheir consumption patterns. At the Expo Milano 2015, theEnvironment Day was presented by Achim Steiner,Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and ExecutiveDirector of UNEP (United Nations Environment programme), whointends to be present at the Expo the whole day on Friday,together with the Italian Minister for the Environment, GianLuca Galletti. "The day will be celebrated throughout the worldby millions of people through thousands of events," announcedMr Steiner. Events will also be staged at the Expo Milano andwill be visited by the Italian President of the Republic,Sergio Mattarella. Mr Steiner focused his attention on the needfor sustainable and informed consumption patterns. He said:"The last century has witnessed a rapid transformation of ourrelationship with the natural world, with the escalating use ofnatural resources leading to environmental degradation. We arenow operating at about 40 percent above the earth's budget. Ifworld population and consumption rates continue according tobusiness as usual, annual global resource extraction couldtriple from 2000 levels to 140 billion tons by 2050." MinisterGalletti added: "During these last few months, the Expo has putthe environment, food waste and protection of territory at thecentre of debate. We want to convey the important message thatbetting on the environment means taking care of our planet andour planet now needs special care, which is not postponable .We want to call on all the countries to pass seriousenvironmental policies that can no longer be delayed." MrGalletti went on to recall the essential upcoming role playedby the 2015 Paris Climate Change Conference where, the ministersaid, that "it is mandatory to reach an ambitious agreementenabling us to achieve the objective that we set forth, ofkeeping global warming to under two degrees. I expect countriesto commit to this achievement. We must go to Paris with bindingcommitments, being sure that we can combine economic growthwith respect for the environment. We are ready to put ourstakes on a circular economy and we know that Paris will issuea clear message in this sense.".
